Reme-D, an Egyptian healthtech business, has raised $1.45 million in a pre-Series A fundraising round headed by Anara Impact Capital. Investors in the round included the Global Innovation Fund, Africa Health Ventures, and others.
Reme-D intends to use the funds to develop its manufacturing operations, explore new African markets, and diversify its portfolio of molecular diagnostic products. The company is also working on producing tests for genetic diseases and cancer, as well as making more of its goods temperature resistant, which will facilitate shipping and storage in locations with inadequate healthcare infrastructure.
Reme-D was founded in 2023 by Salma Tammam and develops molecular testing for diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis, and human papillomavirus. The Cairo-based company claims to have commercialised 30 diagnostic items and supplied over 550,000 tests to customers in Egypt, Kenya, and Sudan.
Reme-D intends to expand by moving to a 1,500-square-metre production facility and improving its equipment. The move is expected to increase manufacturing capacity tenfold. Its employment has already increased from five to more than fifty.
The business recently constructed a customized solar-powered mobile laboratory for the World Health Organization’s Egypt branch. The institution helps the Egyptian Ministry of Health track vector-borne diseases in rural villages.
Reme-D previously received $500,000 from the Global Innovation Fund to help expand its molecular diagnostic products. The latest funding is intended to help it achieve its objective of making locally built, low-cost diagnostic tools more widely available in Africa and other underdeveloped places.
