Flutterwave Hits $3.2 Billion Valuation Following Ripple’s Investment in Series E Round

Flutterwave, an African payments startup, has concluded an undisclosed Series E funding round valued at $3.2 billion, marking yet another significant fundraising milestone for one of the continent’s most well-known digital companies.

Ripple, a blockchain and digital banking business, participated as a strategic investor in the round. The cooperation is expected to help Flutterwave grow stablecoin-based payments and improve cross-border settlements for African businesses and consumers.

Flutterwave was founded in 2016 to make it easier for retailers, banks, and other organisations to accept and process various payment methods using a single technology link. The company claims that its network has processed more than $40 billion in payments and supported over one billion transactions.

The fresh investment comes after Flutterwave’s $250 million Series D round in 2022. It also comes after the business received a Nigerian banking license, allowing it more leeway to develop and distribute regulated financial services in its largest home market.

Flutterwave intends to integrate Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin into many aspects of its payment infrastructure as part of its partnership with Ripple. Transactions are also intended to leverage the XRP Ledger as a settlement network for stablecoin movements.

Stablecoins are digital assets that are intended to retain a somewhat consistent value, typically by being linked to a traditional currency such as the US dollar. Payment businesses are increasingly seeing them as a potential solution to cut the cost and time connected with money transfers across nations.

For Flutterwave, the cooperation could give an additional settlement alternative for merchants operating in many African currencies and banking systems. Businesses involved in imports, exports, and digital services sometimes face exorbitant transfer fees, foreign exchange shortages, and delayed settlements.

The amount raised in the Series E round has not been made public. Flutterwave has also not provided a comprehensive list of participating investors.

Nonetheless, Ripple’s involvement suggests that the funding is about more than just improving Flutterwave’s worth. It signifies a strategic investment in blockchain-based settlement infrastructure as the company seeks to connect African commerce more directly with global markets.

The issue will be growing these services while adhering to the many financial, data-protection, and digital-asset restrictions that apply across African countries.
